Eyes in the Darkness…

August 28, 2009 - Eyes in the Darkness…
Well we decided to take another trip to Prime Rib and try some techniques to see if they generate the same results. We think we may have stumble across something to generate some curiosity in them. But in all reality who knows if what we are doing really works or if it is all blind luck. If it keeps working in this area it may not work in another areas. So our next trip will be to a new area to test the results.
We had some of the core group go which included GITD, Skoo, EJ, Spartan117, Lucky Charms, Slugger and myself. We also had a new comer to our group who we will refer to as Shenzi. Shenzi has never gone Squatching before so this was a first. Shenzi is curious but doesn’t really have an opinion per say.
On the way up Shenzi said I didn’t warn about Sluggers driving and that Shenzi and GITD were suffering from it. I think they would have suffered no matter what vehicle they were in. I think Slugger was actually doing it on purpose.
We arrived before it got dark and then made our way to where we were going to spend the evening. Shortly after dark we talked to a couple of locals that were making their way by us. We played some sounds for them and they said they have heard them before and that they hear them every time they come up but at a different location. It was too late for us to make it to that location so we will try that one another time. Anyway they were very helpful and friendly even after I told them what we were doing.
We were just sitting around making light conversation and just after 2100 GITD thought there was something on the road walking up in our direction out of the corner of GITD’s eye. GITD’s first impression was that someone was walking towards us but when GITD turned to look nothing was to be seen. Could have just crossed the pass from cover to cover.
Just as a note we did hear noises from time to time fairly often when we were up there but I am only going to mention noises that may have been linked to something that happened. The noises could have been anything in all honesty.
GITD, Lucky Charms and Shenzi left the sitting area to go and use the bathroom around 2124. They were taking a while so I yelled at around 2131 if they were okay. They replied that they were. About 40 seconds after I yelled a rock or object hit the slope above us. It sounded like rock on rock. At 2132 Lucky Charm asked if we did a whoop and we had not. We did not hear anything but they said they heard a whoop but it was not real loud. At 2133 GITD asked if we had our red head lamps on which we did not. About two minutes after that I heard something just off of the path they took to use the restroom. I then told Lucky Charms to do a howl. About three minutes after that they came back. We asked what had happened. They said they were up there and they heard what sounded like a whoop. Then just before they asked if we had a red lamp on Lucky Charms saw a red illumination similar to what Lucky had seen at UpChuck. It was pointed out to Shenzi and Shenzi asked what it was. Lucky said it looks like an eye shine like what was seen at UpChuck. GITD agreed. They then asked if we had our lamps on because it was just off the trail they took to go up there. The same place I heard noise from. They said it was as bright as a headlamp but did not give off light. We did the experiment showing how a head lamp also lights up the surrounding area and the person. This did not do that. They only saw one and made the comment that it was spying on them while they peed. We always try to disprove what is going on just to make sure we are not misidentifying something. This red glow did not give off light like the head lamp. It is similiar to all of the other eye shines they have witnessed.
2140 EJ saw the red glow again and then felt a wave of emotion.
2142 it was Sluggers turn to go and use the potty chair. Lucky went with Slugger up the same path the others took earlier.
2145 GITD says there was movement on the other side of the road and it was lighter than everything else. Shenzi happened to be looking in the same direction and confirmed it. Shenzi thought it was imagination running wild until GITD said something.
I called up to Lucky and requested a howl at 2150. Skoo followed with two whoops from our location about a minute later. About a minute later Skoo mentioned that a dark spot above us was now gone. Skoo also mentioned that there was red eye shine there but not bright.
2154 Slugger and Lucky returned and said they heard a really low “Whoo, Whoo” when they started coming back. It was really faint from the direction of the first red eye shine. I did a howl a couple of minutes later.
2205 Slugger did one wood knock.
2207 Slugger did three wood knocks. Shortly after that Lucky Charms suggested we split up into two groups. Lucky, GITD, Slugger and Shenzi went up the trail above us by about thirty yards. We could still see their location with ease and they had a slightly better view because they were higher than we were.
2212 Lucky’s group started singing and making noise. We joined in and it got pretty crazy. I think Shenzi was a little suprised at what we were doing and I could hear Shenzi just laughing the entire time.
2222 Lucky said there was eye shine in front of my group and to the right while everyone was still singing. This was in the direction of where the eye shine was seen earlier or I should say in the same group of trees and shrubs (this is where later eye shine would be seen too). I didn’t catch that until I listened to the recording. During the time I didn’t hear Lucky. Just a few seconds after Lucky said that I started call blasting.
2226 Right after I was done Slugger called and said GITD was looking at eye shine with the Night Vision. GITD had spotted it while I was call blasting. The Night Vision is GEN1 with an Infrared Illuminator. The Illuminator emits a beam of infrared light and is good to over 100 yards. When that beam hits an animal that is capable of seeing in the dark the eyes light up like Christmas tree lights if the animal is looking in your direction. I have had our core group look at my neighbors black lab at night (and other animals) to get a reference and the dog looked like a demon dog with the glowing bright green eyes. Anyway GITD has seen the dog and said that is what was now being seen in the night vision (the glowing green eyes). It was hiding behind a tree just about fifteen to twenty feet from my group and to the right but was giving the impression it was looking at the upper group. The one eye was moving and blinking. I grilled GITD on the location, if it was close to the tree, if it was moving, if it was blinking etc… I wanted to make sure. It was on a slope and I wanted to make sure it was not something else like star light or another animal. Then I said you have to let the others see it too so we have more than one witness. GITD said it moved to the other side of the tree closer to us and that there was now another eye shine lower and both are now visible. GITD didn’t want to give up the NV but finally passed it to Lucky Charms. GITD also mentioned the area behind the eye was black or darker than everything else.
2231 Lucky sees two in the NV and GITD sees a red eye shine in the same place without the NV. Just prior to this with direction from the upper group I realized I was looking in the wrong spot. I am now looking in the right location and also realized that I had heard something from this location prior to all of the eye shine being seen. This was not far from the area where they had seen the eye shine while using the restroom. Or at least it was in the same clump of trees and shrubs.
2237 Shenzi is now looking. Shenzi sees it go back and forth from one side of the tree to the other and changing elevations. Shenzi also sees both eyes from one subject while using the NV. I have also been watching the tree for movement since I realized where this was all taking place. I did take my eyes off of it from time to time to look around and look back at the upper group.
2238 As I am watching the tree I see sky suddenly appear where it was once black. The crook of the tree is no longer pitch black and I can now see patches of sky through it. It appears something was blocking the light and has now moved. Two minutes later Shenzi said it move dramatically. Then the NV was given to Slugger.
2241 Lucky and Shenzi see red eye shine move from one side of the tree to the other without the NV. From left to right. At this time it could be watching us. This entire time each person commented about the slight movement of the eye shine and that it was blinking while they were looking through the NV.
2242 Shenzi wants to walk down to our location to verify. I told her no and that if they wanted I would go to that location to see if it leaves.
2244 Once Slugger gets the NV and stands up we believe this is when they left. I could hear noises on the recording but at this time I was yelling instructions so I did not hear anything leave. The ground in the area is duff, loose earth and pine needles.
2246 I walked over to where the eyes where and nothing was there. We then went through a series of test. I had all four of them look at me with the NV while I was crouching down. They said my eyes were not bright enough nor big enough. I then stood up to see if that was how tall the eyes were. They said the eyes were taller. I then stretched my hand and it was still taller. We estimated that the eyes were at least eight and a half feet above the ground. After I we did the test with me near the tree area I went up to where they were sitting to see for myself. I found where there butts where and had Lucky and Slugger come up. I asked questions on where they had seen them so I could move around to verify they did not see something by mistake. I could not make anything out the gave a reflection from the NV. I even phsically checked the area and I found nothing.
Before we left we checked the area out where we thought they were standing. There was signs of large compressed areas. There was also upturned earth and other signs of recent passage. But because of the type of materials I could not make out any toes nor fingers. We were running out of time for the night so we could not track extensively but it appeared there was track lines from the underbrush to the tree area with several impressions around the tree area.
Do I wish I had some thermals here and the answer would be yes. I think the Squatches are ballsy in this area. The last few times we have been here we have had up close and personal encounters with our group. The individuals that lead us to this area have also confirmed this too. If I had some good camera traps this might be a good spot for them.
I guess we will let the reader decide for themselves. I know that four of individuals in our group believe they were watching a Squatch or two.
